Joy Horn Ebenezer Mann and the Order of the Sprouting Grain
Joy Horn will tell us about the life and work of Ebenezer Mann (1881-1957). Having originally trained as an ironmonger’s apprentice in his father’s store, David Mann & Sons, he became a missionary and worked in China for 42 years, before returning to Cranleigh in 1945.

Handa Bray Air and Exercise - The Story of the Hurtwood Control
More than 90 years ago, Reggie Bray, Lord of the Manor of Shere, granted the public a ‘right to roam’ with ‘open access for air and exercise’ on the Hurtwood – one of the first estates in England to do so. Handa Bray, Reggie’s grand-niece and current Lord of the Manor of Shere, will tell us the story of the Hurtwood.

Jonathan Pratt What do I know?
Jonathan Pratt of Bellmans will tell us about his work as an auctioneer. He will be bringing along items of interest from forthcoming sales for us to look at and handle and will also tell us how television has changed the business and about his role in ‘Bargain Hunt’ and ‘The Antiques Road Trip’.

2011 marks the 400th anniversary of George Abbot’s appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury. In this talk, Tony Richmond will trace his rise from humble beginnings, his service to James I, the Bible, his writings, his Church career, his downfall and his legacy.

Alan Crocker The Surrey Industrial History Awards
In 1983 the Surrey Industrial History Group decided to make an annual award, in the form of a commemorative plaque, to acknowledge the contribution made by an individual or organisation in conserving the industrial heritage of the county. Alan Crocker will tell us about the projects for which plaques have been awarded, including Baynards Railway Station, The Old Farm at Shere and Albury Pigeon House.

Dr Robin Fawkner-Corbett The Early History of the Village Hospital
Cranley Hospital was founded in 1859 and claims to be the oldest cottage hospital in the country. Dr Corbett, a retired Senior Partner at Cranleigh Health Practice, has been closely involved with the hospital and in this talk he will be focusing on what it was like during the Victorian era.
Please note this meeting will be held at the Village Hall, not the Glebe Centre.

Philip Hutchinson Guildford Castle and Palace
Philip Hutchinson, Senior Custodian of Guildford Castle Keep, will tell us about the history of Guildford Castle, and its eventual use as a tourist attraction, illustrated by items from his extensive collection of postcards, photographs and related ephemera.
